— Flue (n.) – a duct for smoke and waste gasses produced by a fire, a gas heater, a power station, or other fuel-burning installation.
— Flu (n.) – a sickness with side effects that aren’t pretty.
If your chimney flue isn’t breathing right, Above All Chimney can nurse it back to life. There are many things that can impair your chimney’s “health”. Here are some tips on proactively fighting flue issues in your home’s fireplace:
- Monitor the Humidity – When dampness accumulates inside a flue, it can lead to acids that destroy mortar joints, and brickwork. Proper ventilation can help prevent this from occurring (especially in the warmer months). We can help you avoid unwanted moisture by stripping the plaster to allow the wall to dry out. In severe scenarios, we can apply a new finish for you.
- Address Cracks – Repairing damaged brick can lead to weaknesses and reduced efficacy in your flue. To heal vertical cracks and provide insulation, we can install a flue liner to strengthen your chimney.
- Rain, Rain, Go Away – Use restrained flue capping to keep rain from trickling into your fireplace. As we discussed earlier, moisture leads to damage. Nip that problem in the bud by allowing us to install a rain cap. This is also critical to prevent birds, squirrels, and other animals from entering your chimney (and home).
- Fix Damaged Smoke Chambers – These are the cone-shaped area above the firebox (and behind the damper). If there are any gaps, cracks, or holes, you will need an expert to fix the mantel and fireplace framing. When we check the chambers we also evaluate the damper (the door/plate that separates the home from the chimney) and the smoke shelf (the shelf inside the smoke chamber.) Shelves are where dirt, creosote, and animals will often gather.
